To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Australian Golf Digest has released a list of the 40 most influential people in the Australian Golf World. Atop of the list are both Steve Bann and Dale Lynch for their outstanding achievements throughout their career as golf instructors. Lynch and Bann combined have coached high-calibre golfers that include a record low 59 in tournament play, a major championship, a junior championship, and even an amateur championship.
The issue, which covers years 1970-2010 was released in Australia but we have a PDF version of the special section which can be found below.
Stuart Appleby has been voted the PGA Tour comeback player of the year after going from his worst season to a magical win.
Appleby won The Greenbrier Classic by closing with a 59, making him one of only two players to hit golf’s magic number in the last round. His historic win followed a year in which he finished outside the top 125 on the money list for the first time since his rookie season.
The Australian used a one-time exemption for career money to keep his card. His win helped him to finish 38th on the money list, and he topped off his year by winning the Australian Masters.
Players voted for Appleby over Rocco Mediate and Arjun Atwal.

SYDNEY – Geoff Ogilvy won the Australian Open on Sunday for his second professional victory in his home country, closing with a 3-under 69 for a four-stroke victory.
Ogilvy had a 19-under 269 total at The Lakes. The 2006 U.S. Open champion won the 2008 Australian PGA for his only other professional victory Down Under.
“I played really well every day,” said Ogilvy, who opened with rounds of 68, 65 and 67. “Today was probably the day I struggled most with my game. But all I had to do was not mess up, really.”
He slumped after winning the PGA Tour’s season-opening event at Kapalua.
“I won the first week and then played relatively horrible golf all year,” Ogilvy said. “I didn’t enjoy golf as much this year because of how I was playing. But anytime you win an Australian Open you’ll look back and think you’ve had a great year. This is the 90-year-old trophy. This is the real jewel.”
Alistair Presnell (67) and Matt Jones (68) tied for second, Jordan Sherratt (67) and John Senden (69) followed at 12 under, and American David Oh (69) was in a group at 11 under. Sherratt was making his pro debut.
Greg Norman (72) and 2009 winner Adam Scott (71) finished 16 strokes behind Ogilvy.
Stuart Appleby carded a final round of 6-under-par 65 and won the JBWere Masters by a stroke over Adam Bland.
Appleby started the day seven strokes off the pace, but he moved up the leaderboard with a run of three birdies in four holes starting at the par-3 4th hole.
On the back nine he opened with a birdie, but it was a long par-putt at the par-3 16th that jump-started his final move up the leaderboard. Appleby dropped a long putt at the 17th to grab the lead and he was able to two-putt birdie the par-5 18th to take a two-stroke advantage.
He then had to wait to see if the closing groups could equal his aggregate score of 10-under-par and Adam Bland did have an eagle-putt at the par-5 18th, which would have forced a playoff, but his putt tailed off at the end.
The victory is Appleby’s first Australian Masters title and it is his second championship of the 2010 season.

Atwal’s one shot victory (-20) over David Toms will allow him to play in next years Masters as well as other various PGA TOUR events. “I don’t have a card, I don’t have anything. Just go out there and free-wheel it, and that’s what I did this week,” the Indian-born player added.
This most recent win has now put BannLynch Golf at three wins for the season, with Geoff Ogilvy and Stuart Appleby winning earlier this year.
Six Mile, S.C. (August 1,2010) – The International Institute of Golf (IIG) would like to congratulate Stuart Appleby on his victory Sunday at the Inaugural Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. The win marks Appleby’s first title since the 2006 Houston Open and his ninth US PGA Tour victory overall. Appleby won in record fashion, closing with a final round 59 to become the first ever non – American to do so and only the fifth player ever on the US PGA TOUR. Appleby’s round, which included nine birdies and an eagle at the 12th, saw him come from seven shots back to beat Jeff Overton by a stroke.
“I had a quiet voice in the back of my head saying you’re going to make this, you’re going to make this,” Appleby said of the 11-footer he drained for birdie and 59 on the final green. “I felt like I was going to make that putt. It was just a beautiful round of golf from a feeling point of view.”
Appleby’s success is no surprise to his longtime coach and IIG Principal Director, Steve Bann. ”We have been working hard the last couple of years and it was great to finally see it all come to fruition. It’s exciting to see Stuart back in form and I look forward to his rise in the golfing ranks once again,” said Bann.
